Local Papers Urge Community Support of Levy

Both the North Kitsap Herald and the Kitsap Sun have recommended that the levy be passed. You can read the Herald's article here, and the Kitsap Sun's article here. We thank them for their support.

Why Now?

levy as portion of district budgetThis levy is not a new levy. It continues a levy, approved in 2006, which expires at the end of 2010. The current level of State and Federal funding for education does not meet the needs of the District to provide the required services to the students. So the residents of North Kitsap are asked for their support at the local level to fill in the money to pay part of the cost of instructional programs, student support programs, and maintenance and operations support of the District. . The existing levy makes up nearly 20% of the overall district budget.

How Much Is Needed?

The North Kitsap School District Board passed a resolution on October 22, 2009 asking for $13,200,000 in 2010 for collection in 2011, $13,600,000 in 2011 for collection in 2012, $14,300,000 in 2012 for collection in 2013, and $15,000,000 in 2013 for collection in 2014.

At this point, it means that taxpayers would be paying an estimated $1.96 per $1000 assessed value of their property. Please see "What is a Levy" and the "Calculator" for a more complete explanation.

What Is The Money Used For?

In previous years, levCar Clingy funds have helped put counselors and librarians in the schools. The money is used to support after-school activities and athletics. Some transportation is supplemented by the levy funds. The emergency preparedness of the District schools has also been a target of levy support.

The money fills in many holes where funding provided by State and Federal authorities is insufficient to cover the actual cost of provided the services to the students.
